MAJOR
ISSUES
Over the past few years, several parties on the
intellectual and formal arena have drawn some observations and
ideas about the strategy of addressing the issue of women. Among
those ideas a number of issues emerged to constitute special
challenges, which should be addressed y the strategy makers as the
majority of studies revealed. Those issues are divided into three
major divisions:
Major issues of the state of Kuwait.
The special characteristics of the Kuwaiti society,
which can be classified, in general, as a conservative community
that adheres to its cultures with all Islamic, Arabic and Gulf
dimensions. In addition, the Kuwaiti society has, for decades, had
a tendency towards democracy, armed by an in-depth experience of
democratic practice, as well as continuous strive for establishing
the women's political entitlements.
- The core political changes that led to declaring full political
entitlements of the Kuwaiti women on 16 May 2005, and the
appointment of the first female minister and two female members in
the municipal council. These facts will change the map of the
Kuwaiti arena to include about 200,000 female votes, against
approximately 130,000 votes only for males.
- The structural changes that are taking place in the Kuwaiti
economy, and restructuring of the government, by focusing on
reducing the roles of governmental agencies in providing services
and implementing social programs. This will lead to activating the
role of the civil society and private sector in these areas.
- It is impossible to continue development with the unilateral
trend that depends almost entirely on the oil. Alternative sources
of income must be solicited to secure the future of the state and
generations to come.
- Major issues of the age.
